Plantar Fasciitis CAT Flashcards
1
Q
What is plantar fasciitis?
A
- Inflammatory process of the plantar fascia at its origin (calcaneus)
- Develops secondary to repetitive stretching of the plantar fascia
2
Q
Mechanism for repetitive stretching of fascia
A
Excessive foot pronation during loading phase of gait
3
Q
Factors contributing to onset of plantar fasciitis
A
- Excessive pronation during gait
- Tightness of foot and calf muscles
- Obesity
- High arches
- Endurance sports
- Prolonged walking or standing
4
Q
Clinical presentation for plantar fasciitis
A
- Severe pain in heel w/ standing in morning
- Pain radiating up calf and/or distally to toes
- Pain subsides after a few hours, returns w/ prolonged activity
- TTP at calcaneal insertion
- Usually unilateral
- Tightness in Achilles
5
Q
Labs/imaging for plantar fasciitis
A
- MRI after 6-8 weeks to confirm diagnosis
- X-ray to rule out fracture
- EMG to rule out nerve entrapment
6
Q
Additional potential findings
A
Bony hypertrophy
7
Q
Medical management of plantar fasciitis
A
- Local corticosteroid injection
- Anti-inflammatory meds
8
Q
PT management of plantar fasciitis
A
- Massage
- Shoe mods
- Orthotics
- Exercise
- Stretching
- Casting
