Rotator Cuff Tendonitis CAT Flashcards
1
Q
What causes RC tendonitis?
A
Weakness of the supraspinatus allows for impingement
2
Q
Primary shoulder impingement
A
Intrinsic or extrinsic factors w/in the subacromial space
3
Q
Secondary shoulder impingement
A
Symptoms occur from poor mechanics or instability at the shoulder
4
Q
Which muscle is most commonly involved w/ RC tendinopathy?
A
Supraspinatus
5
Q
Contributing factors for RC tendinitis
A
- OH activities
- Excessive use after inactivity
- 25-40 y/o
6
Q
Clinical presentation for RC tendinitis
A
- Difficulty w/ OH activities
- Dull ache
- Weakness
- Painful arc at 60-120 degrees abduction
- TTP at musculotendinous junction of involved muscle
- Pain w/ contraction of involved muscle
7
Q
Labs/imaging w/ RC tendinitis
A
- MRI (not commonly used for this due to cost)
- X-ray for bony abnormalities
8
Q
Special tests for RC tendinitis
A
- Empty can
- Neer impingement
- Hawking-Kennedy
9
Q
Additional findings common w/ RC tendonitis
A
Impingement syndrome
10
Q
Timeline for treating RC tendinitis
A
4-6 weeks
11
Q
Stage 1 impingement syndrome
A
- Usually <25 years
- Consists of localized inflammation, edema, and minimal bleeding around the RC
12
Q
Stage 2 impingement syndrome
A
- Usually 25-40 yr
- Progressive deterioration
13
Q
Stage 3 impingement syndrome
A
- 40+
- Disruption and/or rupture of numerous soft tissue structures
