primary appraisal
initial process of evaluating the nature of an incoming stressor, specifically the kind of stress it might cause
3 types of primary apprasial
irrelevant; benign-positive; stressful.
irrelevant - prim appraisal
When an encounter with the environment carries no implication for a person’s well-being
benign positive - prim appraisal
preserves or enhances well-being
stressful - prim appraisal
stimulus is either evaluated as harm/loss, threat or challenge.
harm, threat and challebge
harm/loss: some damage has already been sustained
threat: threat conserns have not yet taken place but r anticipated
challenge: focus on potential for gain or growth inherent in an encounter and thy are characterised by pleasurable emotions
secondary appraisal
process of evaluating the resources required and available in order to cope with a stressor
strengths
-allows tracking of subjective stress reponse
-helps explain y the same stressor may have diff effects on diff people
limitation
- may not be aware of y they feel certain kinds of stress
-cannot be easily tested by research
