General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) Flashcards
GAS
3 STAGE physiological response to stress that occurs regardless of the stressor that is encountered
3 stages
1.alarm reaction
2.resistance
3.exhaustion
- alarm reaction
initial decrease and subsequent increase in bodily arousal in response to an immediate stressor
alarm shock - shock and counter shock
decreased bodily arousal for a brief period of time following the initial exposure to a stressor
sympathetic nervous system responses occur that mobilise the body to respond to the stressor
resistance
maintaining high levels of bodily arousal in response to a persistent stressor - but that ability begins to decline
exhaustion
depletion of energy levels and bodily resources, resulting in an inability to cope with the stressor - no longer adapt
shock -
counter shock -
shock: freeze response
counter shock: flight or fight
strenghts of GAP
- chronic stress
-link between stress n disease
-psychological process that underlie stress
limitation of GAS:
- assumes stress is non specific response
-ignores stress as pychological response to a stressor
flight or fight or freeze response - alarm reaction
shock can be likened to..
- shock can be likened to our freeze response
flight or fight or freeze response
- counter shock can be likened to
our flight or fight response
cortisol - alarm reaction
- cortisol begins to be released
during counter shock
cortisol - resistance
- cortisol enables
us to maintain our resistance above norma level
cortisol - exhaustion:
-our level of cortisol begins
begins to reduce following ‘resistance’
