The water cycle - SB9 Flashcards
what type of compounds do organisms need from their environment to stay alive?
nitrogen and carbon
Why must carbon + nitrogen compounds be recyled?
there are limited amounts on Earth - they are needed to support life
what is step 1 of the water cycle
water evapourates from oceans, lakes and rivers to form water vapour
what is step 2 of the water cycle?
as air rises it cools so water vapour condenses to form clouds
what is step 3 of the water cycle?
water droplets get too large and heavy - they fall as rain or snow
what is step 4 of the water cycle?
rivers flow into lakes and eventually the water returns to the ocean
what percent of the body is water mass?
60%
what doe spotable mean?
safe for drinking
what are sources of fresh water in the environment?
rivers, lakes + groundwater
how is potable water made?
water must be treated with chemicals and flitered to remove dirt, pathogens and toxic substances
how is water obtained in places where there is drought?
collected from the air or extracted from sea water
what is desalination?
obtaining fresh water from the sea / salty water
what method can be used do desalinate?
distillation
what is distilation?
where water is evapourated and condensed and then colleced
how does a solar still work to provide distilled water?
dirty water is placed inside via tube, water is left in sun to evapourated, the water then condenses under the plastic cover and collects at the bottom of the slope
