Q

describe the steps within the lytic pathway of a virus?

A

virus firstly inserts it’s genetic material into the host cell
then uses the host cell to make virus components
virus components are assembled in cell
cell lyses to release virus to other cells

Q

describe the steps in the lysogenic pathway of a virus?

A

viral DNA integrates itself into host chromosomes
host cell and viral DNA replicate and divide via mitosis - making the virus a part of all new cells
when triggered the virus becomes active (THIS CAUSES LYTIC PATHWAY)

Q

What is a bacterial lawn plate?what happens when viruses are added? how does one tell how many bacteria were killed?

A

a plate containing nutrients to enable the bacteria to grow - viruses added to the bacterial lawn create clear areas where the bacteria were killed. the larger the clear area = the more bacteria killed

Q

what is the capsid of the virus?

A

the outside protein layer - viruses attach to a cell membrane using protein fibres and infect the DNA in a cell
