active sites and substrates - SB1 Flashcards
what is the active site?
where the substrate fits on the part of the enzyme at the start of the reaction
how does the active site differ for different enzymes
different enzymes have active sites of different shapes. only certain enzymes work on certain active sites. each enzyme works on one substrate and catalyses only 1 reaction
what does it mean when an active site becomes denatured?
when the active site changes shape due to pH or temperature change so the substrate no longer fits
what is the function of the active site?
holds the substrate molecules tightly in the right position for bonds to form
why do enzymes only work on specific substrates?
because the shape of the active site only fits one type of molecule
what is a lock and key diagram?
a diagram of an enzyme with a substrate in it’s active site
