Cellular respiration - SB8 Flashcards
what 3 things does the body require constant supply of energy for?
moving, keeping warm, producing/breaking down substances
what is cellular respiration?
series of chemical reactions that release energy from glucose
why is respiration exothermic?
some energy is transfered out by heating of cells
what is the main type of cellular respiration (what does it mean) and where do most of these reactions occur?
main type is aeorbic (needs oxygen) - most reactions occur in the mitochandria
what is the equation for aeroibic respiration?
glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
what does the circulatory system do for the cells?
makes sure that cells have a good supply of oxygen and glucose
why is faster breathing beneficical?
allows more O2 to diffuse into blood in lungs and allows lungs to exctrete more CO2
What happens to celluar respiration during strenuous excercise? why is this bad?
02 is used up faster than is replaced - the amount of anerobic respuration occuring in cytoplasm increases which produces more lactic acid and creates muscle spasms / stiches
what is anaerobic respiration? (equation too)
respiration that does not require O2 and produces glucose in this equation:
glucose -> lactic acid
what is oxygen debt?
oxygen needed to be repaid to musces after anaerobic respiration
why is anerobic respiration useful for animals? what is the draw back?
useful for prey to get away quickly from predators - however this is inefficient as it cannot be used over long periods of time
