where are hormones produced?
in endocrine glands (that make up the endocrine system)
what are hormones?
chemical molecules released directly into the blood and are carried through the blood to other parts of the body but only affect particular cells in particular organs (target organs)
how does the endocrine system differ from the nervous system?
use chemical impulses instead of electrical, much slower but longer lasting effects than nervous
what is the role of the pituitary gland?
what hormone is produced etc?
release growth hormone, regulate body conditions, send hormones to act on other glands to release their hormones
What is the role of the thyroid gland
what hormone is produced + what does it do?
produces thyroxine that regulates metabolism, heart rate and temperature
What is the role of the ovaries?
what hormone is produced?
produces oestrogen, involved in menstrual cycle
What is the role of the adrenal gland?
what hormone + what does it do?
produce adrenaline, used to prepare body for ‘flight or fight’
what is the role of the testes?
hormone + what it does
produce testosterone which controls puberty + sperm production
What is the role of the pancreas?
hormone + what it does
produce insulin which regulates blood glucose levels
