Specialised cells - SB1 Flashcards
Describe the properties of a white blood cell
Fights infection/viruses
Created in the bone marrow
found in blood and lymph tissue
Part of the immune system
Describe the properties of a red blood cell
carries oxygen
large surface area for oxygen to pass through
found in the blood
Contains haemoglobin which is conjoint with oxygen
Has no nucleus to make room for oxygen
Name 3 specialised cells
Sperm cell Egg cell Muscle cell Ciliated cell Root hair cell Nerve cell Red blood cell White blood cell
Define specialised cell
a cell suited to a specific task or purpose
Describe properties of ciliated cells
They line the air passage to the lungs and sweep dust and bacteria to prevent blockage of airways, they do this using tiny hairs called cilia
Describe the properties of a root hair cell
Found in the roots of plants, they uptake water and nutrients, this is made possible through their large surface area, they also have a thin cell wall to allow water to pass through
Describe properties of a nerve cell
They are long cells with neurotransmitters on either ends, their main function is to send signals to the brain
Describe properties of a sperm cell
They are streamline with a tail to provide movement
Main purpose is to fertilize the egg
Nucleus only contains half sets of genes
Describe properties of an egg cell
Their main purpose is to be fertilized
Found in the ovary
Contains yolk to provide large supply of nutrients for a potential new cell being formed
The nucleus contains a half set of genes like the sperm
