The eye - SB2 Flashcards
What are the main parts of the eye?
The main parts of the eye include the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, retina, optic nerve, and ciliary muscles
What is the cornea?
The cornea is the transparent outer covering of the eye. It helps to focus incoming light rays onto the retina
What is the iris?
The iris is the coloured part of the eye. It controls the size of the pupil, regulating the amount of light entering the eye
What is the pupil?
The pupil is the opening in the centre of the iris. It adjusts in size to control the amount of light entering the eye
What is the lens?
The lens is a transparent, flexible structure located behind the iris. It helps to further focus the light onto the retina
What is the retina?
The retina is a layer of light-sensitive cells at the back of the eye. It contains photoreceptor cells called rods and cones that convert light into electrical signals
What are rods and cones?
Rods and cones are photoreceptor cells found in the retina. Rods are responsible for vision in dim light, while cones are responsible for colour vision and sharp detail
What is the optic nerve?
The optic nerve is a bundle of nerve fibres that carries electrical signals from the retina to the brain, allowing us to perceive visual information
What are ciliary muscles?
Ciliary muscles are located around the lens of the eye. They contract or relax to change the shape of the lens, enabling the eye to focus on objects at different distances
What is the role of the ciliary muscles?
The ciliary muscles control the shape of the lens. They contract or relax to adjust the thickness of the lens, allowing for accommodation and focusing on objects at different distances.
