Abiotic factors and communities - SB9 Flashcards
what is distribution of organisms?
where they are found in an ecosystem
what is distribution affected by? - give example
physical and chemical factors like temperature, rainfall, and substances in soil
what are abiotic factors?
non living factors
what does a belt transect measure?
the effect of abiotic factors on the distribution of organisms
What do quadrats measuing abundance show?
show changes in abundance that show which abiotic factor has greatest effect on organisms
what do adaptions mean?
organism is suited to its particular environment
How does climate change effect organisms with an example on drought?
few animals can survive drought for long. if climate change results in more droughts - more species in different communities may die out
how does temperature affect the distribution of organisms?
all organisms are adapted to suit a certain life in temperatures. long term effects to temp inecosystem with change distribution and affect the whole community
Why is light important to plants?
for growth
why cant plants grow on forest floor in dense forests?
light wont reach them
what are biotic factors?
organisms in an ecosystem that affect other living organisms
How is predation affected by changes in specie levels? how do these levels change
when animals compete for food from producers, some do not recieve enough and so they die out , or some recieve too much and grow too quick which affects predation
how are predators and prey numbers closely related?
in small communites they can be related in a predator-prey cycle
how can bio-diversity be introduced?
increasing/decreasing numbers of a species in an ecosystem
what does bio-diversity enable in an ecosystem?
new habitats, and hence more diverse species
