Ecosystems - SB9 Flashcards
what do organisms need to stay alive? (list examples)
resources such as oxygen, nutrients and water
what conditions do plants require?
space, light, water, CO2, O2, warmth, mineral ions
what conditions do animals require?
oxygen, water and food
what are the components of an ecosystem?
organisms and their environment in which they live
what are the components of a community?
all organisms that live within an ecosystem - populations of different species
what does it mean for organisms to be ‘inter-dependant’?
species depending on eachother for resources
where does each population of organisms live?
in a habitat
what is abundance a measure of? give an example
a measure if how common something is in an area, like population size
how can population size be estimated?
by taking samples using a quadrat
what is the equation for population size?
number of organisms in all quadrats x (total size of area where org. libes / total area of quadrats)
what does a food web show?
shows the feeding relationship between the organisms in a community
how can a food web be used?
to predict what will happen if there are changes in the ecosystem
what is the sequence for a food web?
producer
primary consumer (herbivore)
secondary consumer (carnivore)
tertiary consumer (carnivore)
top predator
