the brain - SB2 Flashcards
what are the main parts of the brain + where are they each located?
cerebellum + spinal cord + medulla oblongata = at the bottom of brain
cerebral cortex = front of brain
what are the roles of the spinal cord?
carries signals between the brain and the rest of the body and made of many nerves
what are the roles of the medulla oblongata?
controls your heart rate and controls breathing rate
what is the role of the cerebellum?
used for balance
what are the roles of the front brain?
used for consciousness and language
what are the roles of the cerebral cortex?+ what is it composed of?
used for memory and behaviour (contains 2 cerebral hemispheres
what is the role of the back of the brain?
used for most senses including vision
what 3 parts make up the nervous system?
nerves, brain, spinal chord
How are brain functions tested?
through PET scans
What are the advantages to a CT scan?
shows shapes in detail and is non invasive (meaning it does not damage the brain tissue)
What are some advantages about a PET scan?
shows brain activity + non-invasive
what does MRI stand for?
Magnetic resonance imaging
what are some disadvantages about PET scans
radioactive contrast substance (glucose) scan
what are some disadvantages of x-rays?
dangerous and shows no activity
what are impulses?
electrical signals that are transmitted along the nurone
