Q

What are common features of sexual reproduction?

A

uses meiosis (the reproduction of gametes)

requires 2 parent cells

produces genetically unidentical offspring

provides variation

involves fertilisation of female and male gametes

Q

what are common features of asexual reproduction?

A

only requires 1 parent

produces 2 genetically identical daughter clone offspring

uses mitosis (reproduction of body cells)

quick reproduction

provides offspring with a full set of chromosomes

Q

what are the steps to meiosis

A
  1. After chromosomes make exact copies of each other and pair up to similar ones- chromosomes line up along the cell equator, then the pairs are separated and move to opposite poles of the cell, the chromosome number is halved
  2. chromatids are separated and sent to polars of the cell
  3. cell splits and division occurs twice to produce 4 unique haploid gametes
