CORE PRACTICAL - testing food energy with a calorimeter - SB1 Flashcards
what does a calorimeter do?
it measures the amount of energy in a food by burning it in a machine
what unit is energy measured in?
joules (J)
what is the purpose of a calorimeter and what does it tell you?
it measures how much energy there is by how much heat is released by food. the more heat = more energy
how can the energy be calculated?
the amount of energy transferred from burning food can be calculated from the increase in water temperature
what apparatus is needed to form the experiment
thermometer, stirrer, clamp, calorimeter (+ water and burning food)
what does the energy transfer into to be recorded?
heat
what can be told about a sample with a lot of energy?
it probably is a lipid (they contain more energy)
