Growth in animals and plants - SB2 Flashcards
What does it mean ‘to grow’?
increase in size as a result of an increase in number of cells - the number of cells increase due to cell division by mitosis
what is differenciation?
the process that changes less specialised cells into more specialised ones
what are meristems?
a group of cells near the end of each shoot and root that allows plants to continue growing throughout their lives
what happens to the cells in meristems to allow the plant to grow?
the cells divide rapidly via mitosis - these cells produce elongation and differenciate into specialised cells that have different functions
how can we measure the percentage change for growth in plants?
final value - starting value / starting value x 100
