Supplements in practice - Essential Fatty Acids Flashcards
Essential Fatty Acids:
With the reduction in intake of fatty aids in the diet, supplements are often the most available and direct source of EPA and DHA:
* Relatively high levels needed for therapeutic effect; e.g. 4g/day EPA/DHA for a minimum of four months for arthritis support.
* Antioxidants should be added to prevent oils oxidising.
* Check if fish oils are from the body or liver of fish: Pollutants may be present in oils made from fish livers.
* Omega-3s in krill oil are more efficiently absorbed in the body as they are carried into the cells in phospholipid form.
* Vegan forms are now available derived from plant marine algae.
* Flaxseed oil is a good plant source of omega-3 (high in ALA – needs converting).
