Supplements in practice - Conclusion Flashcards

1
Q

Conclusion:

A

The body has the power to heal itself but only if it is given the opportunity:
* Supplements may be used as a tool to support the body’s healing process by providing the nutrients needed to make up for any shortfalls, but should be at the correct levels and in a bio-effective form.
* Using supplements as an alternative to a healthy diet and lifestyle will result in the body losing its ability to produce what it needs and will weaken the body in the longer term.
* Our aim as naturopathic nutritionists is to help our clients to restore their health so that there is no need to supplement!

Extra Considerations:

A

When prescribing supplements, take into account:
* The result you are seeking to achieve.
* The length of time the client should take the supplement; the dosage may initially start high and then be altered to a lower dose.
* You are allowed to recommend a higher dosage than it says on a supplement label but you should keep within the safe range.
* It is important to schedule a follow-up with your client but make sure you have an ‘end date’ on your plan anyway.
* Be specific with guidance and follow-up; your client should not take your recommended amount long-term without supervision.
