Strength Testing Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the Oxford Scale (strength testing).
A
- 0 No muscle activation
- 1/I Trace muscle activation, such as a twitch, without achieving fullrange of motion
- 2/II Muscle activation with gravity eliminated, achieving full range of motion
- 3/III Muscle activation against gravity, full range of motion
- 4/IV Muscle activation against moderate resistance, full range of motion
- 5/V Muscle activation against examiner’s full resistance, full range of motion
2
Q
Describe how to complete resisted isometric muscle testing.
A
- use therapists resistance and compare to the other side as estimated %
- use dynamometer to get numerical value
- need to hold for 3-4 seconds (to ensure maximal contraction)
(aim to do at mid-range, as can change depended on where/what length completed)
3
Q
What must you consider when completing a strength assessment?
A
- assess unaffected side first
- patient position
- patient instruction
- checking patient reaction
- STOP if painful
