Basics Flashcards
Anterior/Ventral
= front
Posterior/Dorsal
= back
Lateral
= from the side
Sagittal (or longitudinal) plane
divides the body into right and left parts
Horizontal (or transverse) plane
divides the body into superior and interior parts
Frontal (or coronal) plane
divides the body into the front and back
What is the anatomical midline?
an imaginary vertical line that divides the body equally through the middle
Medial
= toward the midline of the body
Lateral
= away from the midline of the body
Intermediate
= between two structures
Flexion
bending a joint
Extension
straightening a joint
Abduction
movement away from the midline of the body
Adduction
movement towards the midline of the body
Circumduction
movement of a body region in a circular manner (a combined movement)
Medial rotation
movement towards the midline of the body (horizontal plane)
Lateral rotation
movement away from the midline of the body (horizontal plane)
Plantarflexion
movement where the foot points down and away from the leg
Dorsiflexion
movement where the foot comes up and towards the leg
Inversion
movement of the sole of the foot towards the midline of the body
Eversion
movement of the sole of the foot away from the midline of the body
Proximal
closer to the origin
Distal
further away from the origin
Superior/Cephalad
= above (i.e: ‘top’ of femur)
Inferior/Caudal
= below (i.e: ‘lower’ femur)
Pronation
= turning your palm posteriorly or interiorly
Supination
= turning your palm anteriorly or superiorly (soup = supinate)
Oblique plane
a plane that can literally be any type of angle other than horizontal or verticle angle
