What is the first thing you do for Rule 1 Section 3
Stop the train
Can you pass the signal if the track is known to be occupied?
No, if you see the rail is occupied you must wait until the train ahead moves out of sight or out of the track section
How should the track always be considered?
Occupied, Obstructed or Damaged
What would deem it unsafe to proceed?
- Braking ability of the train with consideration of the gradient travelled
- Defective or isolated equipment
- Extremely bad weather conditions
- Poor/Restricted visibility -rain/fog/damaged/obscured/graffitied windscreen
When must the driver stop the train during Rule one section 3 after passing the signal?
When performing any other function, phone call, radio, PEI
After proceeding what must the driver do if they see another train?
Stop until the train has cleared the section and follow slowly at a safe distance
What information is provided to the automated message?
Moto car number
Signal
Name
Can the driver proceed if contact with the automated number is not available?
Yes after 30 seconds
Define extreme caution
Travelling at no faster then 25km/h or posted track speed if lesser and stopping at half the distance you can see.
Always being prepared to find the section ahead occupied obstructed or damaged
When can the driver resume track speed?
Once the entire train has passed the fixed signal
Can a driver use rule 1 section 3 to assist a disabled train?
Yes as the rule book says a train cannot enter an section if it is known to be occupied UNLESS obtaining special instructions to the contrary or assisting a disabled train
Train control will inform the driver of the disabled train
If the driver cannot get through to the automated phone number, what must be done when safe to do so?
Advise train control of the inability to make contact to the automated number
What is the entire R1, S3 Procedure?
Stop the train
Determine if it is safe to proceed taking into account:
Braking in relation to the gradient
Defective or isolated equipment
Poor or restricted visibility,
Inclement weather
Once satisfied it is safe, call the number and give your name motor car number and signal number
If you canโt get through wait 30 seconds and proceed, once completed notify train control.
Before tripping past the signal make a PA announcement advising that the train will come to a stand.
Once past the signal you are to pass at extreme caution, meaning travelling at no faster the. 25km/h being able to stop at half the distance you can see, always expecting the track to be occupied, damaged, or obstructed.
While performing rule 1 section 3 you are not to perform any other functions that will distract you IE phone call, pei, DTRS. If this occurs stop the train.
If you see another train we are too stop and confirm they are either on the parallel line and if they are in the section wait for them to clear it.
We only resume normal speed until our entire train has passed the next fixed signal
