Who’s duty is it to observe the condition of vehicles of the train at regular intervals while in running?

What should the driver look for?
Defects in running
Excess arching on the pantographs
Damaged saloon doors and windows
Smoke coming from saloon - underframe / for fire
Anything hanging/protruding from the train
When is the best time to inspect using the side mirrors?
When train is negotiating curves, especially long sweeping curves
Should you also inspect when running on straight sections? Why?
Yes, some potentially dangerous conditions like protruding loading is best view on the straight
What do you do if you see serious issues or dangerous conditions when observing your train?
Stop your train immediately
Call Train Control - make TEC if problem is only affecting your train or REC
If you’re given a STOP hand signal, do you have to enquire why?
Yes, you must ask why (unless it’s normal circumstances ie Track Force Protection)
