Overactive Bladder Flashcards
S/Sx of OAB
urgency
frequency: > 8 times
Nocturia
incontinence
Urinary incontinence due to urge cause
associated with neuropathy
detrusor muscle
with the bladder outlet functions are neurologically coordinated to store and expel urine
How is the detrusor muscle innervated
via the parasympathetic system (acetylcholine actin on muscarinic receptors)
Define OAB
inappropriate stimulation of the muscarinic receptors on the detrusor muscle causing involuntary contractions and feeling of urinary urgency
Of the 3 muscarinic receptors in the bladder which is responsible for both emptying contractions as well as involuntary bladder contractions
M3
Treatment of OAB
first-line -kegals second-line -anticholinergic drugs -beta-3 receptor agonists
List anticholinergics for OAB
oxybutynin
solifenacin
Contraindication for anticholinergics
narrow angle glaucoma
beta-3 agonist MOA
relaxes teh detrusor muscle and increases bladder capacity by activating beta-3 receptors
List a beta-3 agonist
mirabegron
first line medication for nocturia
desmopressin
desmopressin MOA
antidiuretic hormone to decrease urine production
