COPD Flashcards
Define emphysema
destruction of the small passages in the lungs, called alveoli
Alpha-1 antitrypsin (ATT) deficiency consequence
higher risk of developing COPD b/c ATT helps to protect the lungs from damage caused by inflammation
main difference between COPD and asthma
in asthma airflow is reversible with medication in COPD airflow is not fully reversible and progresses over time leading to gradual loss of lung function
What lab value confirms a diagnosis of COPD
FEV1/FVC < 0.7
Group A COPD treatment
SABA or SAMA PRN
LABA or LAMA
-if regular use is needed
Group B COPD treatment
LABA or LAMA
or LAMA/LABA
Group C COPD treatment
LAMA
Group D COPD treatment
LAMA or
LAMA/LABA (if highly symptomatic)
LABA + ICS (if eos > 300 cell/uL)
when can you add an ICS to COPD treatment
high blood eosinophil (eos) count (a marker of inflammation)
Muscarinic antagnoists/anticholinergics MOA
cause bronchodilation by blocking the constricting action of acetylcholine at M3 muscarinic receptor in bronchial smooth muscle.
List SAMAs (short acting muscarinic antagonist)
ipratropium
List LAMAs
aclidinium
glycopyrrolate
tiotropium
umeclidinium
ipratropium brand name
atrovent
ipratropium + albuterol brand name
combivent
LABAs can only be used as monotherapy in ?
