agonist for 5-HT1 receptor and cause vasoconstriction of cranial blood vessels, inhibit neuropeptide release and decrease pain transmission
contraindication to triptans
cerebrovascular disease
uncontrolled HTN
ischemic heart disease
Ergotamine MOA
nonselective agonist of serotonin receptors which causes cerebral vasocontriction
when to use ergotamines
in patients with contraindications to tripans or find no benefit with triptans
list ergotamine drugs
dihydroergotamine
when to use ppx for migraines
if they use acute treatments > 2days/week or >3 times per month
prophylactic agents for migraines
propranolol topiramate vpa amitriptyline venlafaxine
