Ophthalmology 13 - Posterior Vitreous Detachment + Retinal Detachment Flashcards
vitreous body
gel in eye that maintains structure and presses retina against choroid
posterior vitreous detachement
very common elderly prob
vitreous body comes away from retina
presentation of posterior vitreous detatchment
spots of vision loss
floaters
flashing lights
resolves over time after brain adjustment
(just make sure you’ve excluded retinal detatchment+tear)
retinal detatchment
retina detaches from choroid
usually from retinal tear allowing vitreous fluid between retina and choroid
risk factors for retinal detachment
posterior vit detach diabetic retinopathy eye trauma retinal malignancy older age FH
presentation of retinal detachment
peripheral sudden vision loss shadow creeping across vision blurred vision flashes floaters
management of retinal detachment
full assessment by specialist of retina
tears - laser or cryotherapy
detachment - vitrectomy, scleral buckling, pneumatic retinopexy
