Neuroscience Week 3: Brainstem and Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Identify

Oculomotor nerve #
CN III
Oculomotor nerve Exits the CNS by
Exits the midbrain near the midline
Oculomotor nerve Key Function
- Medial, superior, inferior recti muscles
- Inferior oblique
- Levator palpebrae
- Pupil constriction
Midline brainstem strokes often damage this nerve
Oculomotor Nerve
Abducens Nerve #
CN VI
Abducens Nerve Exits the CNS
near the midline of pontomedullary junction
Abducens Nerve Key Functions
Lateral Rectus
Hypoglossal Nerve #
CN XII
Hypoglossal Nerve Exits CNS
emerges paracentrally from mid medullary level along the midline
Hypoglossal Nerve Key Function
Tongue activation
Spinal Accessory Nerve #
CN XI
Spinal Accessory Nerve Exits the CNS
emerges laterally from the cervical spinal cord
Spinal Accessory Nerve Key Function
- Head turn
- shoulder shrug (Trapezius)
Trochlear Nerve Key Function
Superior oblique
Trochlear Nerve #
CN IV
Trochlear Nerve Exits CNS from
wrap around the outside of the pons but originates from the midline of the lower midbrain
it is the only cranial nerve that decussates and crosses the midline and travels the opposite side of origin
……………………………….
decussates (crosses midline) as it exits the brainstem contralateral (on the side opposite) to its side of origin – it’s the only CN to make this decussation.
IF someone has a head tilt it may be caused from?
attempt to correct eye alignment due to a Trochlear nerve injury
Cranial Nerve Groups
somatomotor set - CNs 3, 4, 6, 12, 11 all innvervate midline muscularture
Solely Special Sensory Set - CNs 1, 2, 8
Pharyngeal Arch Set - CNs 5, 7, 9, 10
Optic Nerve #
CN II
Optic Nerve Function
Vision
Infundibulum can enlarge and damage
optic chiasm
Vestibulocochlear Nerve Function
Hearing and balance
Vestibulocochlear Nerve #
CN VIII

Facial palsy AKA
Facial droop
Glossopharyngeal Nerve #
CN IX
Glossopharyngeal Nerve Key Functions
- Swallowing
- cardio-pulmonary functioning
- Salivation
Glossopharyngeal Nerve Exits CNS from
posterior mid medulla
Vagus Nerve #
CN X
Vagus Nerve Exits CNS from
posterior mid medulla
Vagus Nerve Key Functions
- Cardio/pulmonary
