- acute migraine with or without aura

MOA 5htr agonists
A
- triptans contstrict cranial blood vessels and inhibit NT in peripheral trigeminal nerve in trigeminocervical complex

SE 5HTR agonists
A
- Pain in chest and throat - can be intense but quickly resolves
- rare = MI
- N and V, tiredness, dizziness and transient high BP

CI 5htr agonists
A
- Coronary artery disease
- cerebrovascular disease
- hemiplegic or basilar migraines
all of the above are absolute CI

interactions of triptans
A
- with other seroteonergic drugs = increased risk of serotonin toxicity and serotonin syndrome

dose of sumatriptan for migraines
A
- 50-100mg PO
- if vomit; SC/ intranasal
