A
constipation or as suppositories for faecal impaction

MOA stimulant alxatives
A
- increase h20 and electrolyte secretion from colonic mucosa = increase volume of colonic content and sitmualtign eprsitalsis
- also direct pro-peristaltic effect
- senna; bacteria in gut produce metabolites of this which act on enteric NS = peristalsis.
- rectal - provokes similar to senna effect but more localised effect so good for impaction
- docusate = stimulant and faecal softener

SE stimulant laxatives
A
- abdo pain and cramping
- diarrhoea
- prolonged use; melanosis coli (reversible pigmentation of intestinal wall)

CI stimulant laxatives
A
- bowel obstruction –> perforation
- rectal; avoid in haemmorhoids or fissures
