MOA stimulant alxatives

A
  • increase h20 and electrolyte secretion from colonic mucosa = increase volume of colonic content and sitmualtign eprsitalsis
  • also direct pro-peristaltic effect
  • senna; bacteria in gut produce metabolites of this which act on enteric NS = peristalsis.
  • rectal - provokes similar to senna effect but more localised effect so good for impaction
  • docusate = stimulant and faecal softener

  • diarrhoea
  • prolonged use; melanosis coli (reversible pigmentation of intestinal wall)
