- Constipation and faecal impaction
- bowel prep prior to surgery or endoscopy
- hepatic encephalopathy

A
- osmotically active and remain in gut lumen. hold water in stool maintaining volume and stimualting peristalsis
- lactulose also reduces ammonia absoprtion - by increasing gut transit and acidifying stool.

SE osmotic laxatives
A
- flatulence
- abdo cramps
- nausea
- diarrhoea
phosphate enemas = local irritation and electrolyte disturbances

A
- intestinal obstruction as may perforate.
