MOA antimotility drugs
A
- loperimide, opioid similar to pethidine but does not cross BBB. agonist of mew receptors in gut - increases non propulsive contraction but reduces peristaltcic contractions. = slow bowel transit and anal sphincter tone increased

SE loperamide
A
- GI effects; flatulance, abdo cramps, constipation

- opioid toxicity and dependance risk

when to avoid loperamide
A
UC - increased risk of perforation and megacolon
- c diff
- not use in acute bloody diarrhoea aka dysentery esp as can cause HUS

normal dose loepramide
A
4mg, then 2mg with each loose stool to max of 8mg/day (4 tabls)

artificial tears indications
A
- dry eye conditions e.g. keratoconjunctivitis sicca, sjogrens

artificial tears MOA
A
- Sooth and protect from abrasions.
can get as drops = cellulose polymer - or as gel = higher viscosity and last longer
- or ointment = paraffin = highly viscous

SE artificial tears
A
- mild stinging
- temp blur of vision - more with increased viscosity solutions
- local allergic reaction

eye drops dose
A
1-2 drops TDS, can use more but if needed go for more viscose prep

gel eye lube dose
A
- 1 drop TDS as needed

A
- before bed OD as can cause blurring of vision
