5 alpha reductase - i indications
- BPH - 2nd line after alpha blockers
moa 5 aplha reductase - i
inhibit 5 alpha reductase which converts testosterone into DHT. DHT stimulates prostate growth. but takes a while thats why second line. and added if response is poor or prostate is bulky
SE 5 aplha reductase - i
- antiandrogenic; impotence, reduced libido, gynaecomastia and tenderenss of breasts.
- hair growth - can be psoitive or -ve.
- rare = breast cancer if on finasteride
CI to 5 alpha reductase- i
- pregnant women should not be exposed or take them as semen during unrpotected sex can give to women. - as male foetus exposure can be bad

5mg PO OD
how logn does it take 5 alpha reductase - i to have full effect
- up to 6 months

tamsulosin

alpha blocker indications
- BPH - 1st
- add on for treatment resistant HTN
Alpha blocker MOA
- blocking = vasodilatation and reduced resistance to bladder outflow
SE alpha blocker
- postural hypotension
- dizzy
- syncope
especiallt post first dose
Relative CI to alpha blockers
postural hypotension
if patient also on BB and AB what should they do
first day dont take BB
what dose do u start doxazosin at
1mg per day and increase at 1-2 weekly intervals
what is doxazosin licensed for
- BPH and HTN
what is tamsulosin licensed for
- BPH
- GIVEN 400MCG DAILY
