- alendronic acid for fragility fractures due to osteoporosis
- pamidronate and zolidronic acid = treatment for severe hyperca of malignancy after IV rehydration
+ myeloma and bone mets due to breast ca - 1st line in pagets

A
- inhibits actions of osteoclasts, inhibit activity and promote apoptosis = reduction in bone loss and increased bone mass

A
- oesophagitis and hypophosphotaemia
- osteonecrosis fo the jaw
- atypical femoral fracture

CI bisphosphonates
A
- severe renal impairment
- hypocalcaemia
- upper GI disorders; cannot give orally

- smokers

- milk, antacids, iron salts
- they bind caclium, there absoption is reduced if taken with above
