  • rx of acute herpesvirus infections including herpes simplex e.g. cold sores, genital ulcers, encephalitis. and VZV
  • Supression of recurrent herpes simplex attacks where occuring at frequency of 6 + / year

  • herpes virus = DNA virus. this needs Herpes specific DNA polymerase for virus to replicate.
  • inhibits herpes specific DNA polymerase

SE antivirals

A
  • headaches
  • dizziness
  • GI disturbances
  • skin rash

IV - phlebitis. it is very water insoluble so at high conc can precipitate in renal tubules = AKI. reduce risk by good hydration and slowing infusion
