Lymphoid Pathology Flashcards
1
Q
What is the term for:
- A white cell neoplasm in the blood?
- A myeloid cell mass not in the blood?
- A lymphoid cell mass not in the blood?
A
- Leukaemia
- Myeloid sarcoma (not myeloma!) - very rare
- Lymphoma
2
Q
Can you have metastatic lymphoma?
A
No. Lymphoid tissue is everywhere, so the primary/secondary terms are meaningless
3
Q
What cell line is associated with Hodgkin’s lymphoma? What histologically confirms the diagnosis?
A
- B cell (probably EBV-associated)
- Reed-Sternberg cell (binucleate) or variants
4
Q
Can you use flow cytometry to diagnose Hodgkin’s lymphoma?
A
- No. The population census it undertakes will not detect the sporadic Reed-Sternberg cells
5
Q
Which two lymphoma and leukaemia often co-exist?
A
Small lymphocytic lymphoma and CLL
6
Q
Which non-Hodgkin lymphoma is associated with EBV infection?
A
Burkitt’s
7
Q
Which lymphoma can be the end-point of other lymphomas?
A
Diffuse large-B cell
8
Q
What is a Richter transformation?
A
- Transformation of SLL into diffuse large-B cell lymphoma
- Other lymphomas can also do this, without the eponymous name
9
Q
What is the histological characteristic distinguishing between sarcoidosis and TB?
A
- Non-caseating granulomatous inflammation (sarcoid)
- Caseating granulomatous inflammation (TB)
