What is leadership
Not management
Can be formal or informal
Who are leaders
Individuals who use interpersonal skills to influence others to accomplish specific goals
Who are informal leaders
Not officially appointed but recognized by the group as a leader because of their combination of talent, ability, senority or age
What is managment
Is usually formal
Who are managers
Individuals who hold an official position in an organization, and are essential to organizations success
Trait based leadership
Are born with leader traits
good judgement, knowledge, adaptability, integrity, tacts, self confidence and cooperativeness
Behavior based leadership
Learn behaviors through education, training or life experience
Autocratic style leadership
More of a dictator role, determines all policies and gives orders and directions
Takes over control
Belief that others are incapable of independent decision making
needs for creativity and self motivation are not met
Only effective when urgent decisions need to be met or project must be completed quickly and efficiently
Democratic leadership
Leader guides group towards goal
employees participate in decisions
Leader assume that the individuals are internally motivated, less efficient
Laissez-faire style
Lazy, Hand off approach, less directive more permissive
motivated by their own desire to do well
Members are able to perform tasks in their area of expertise while the leader acts as a resource plan
Bureaucratic leadership
Employees are motivated by external forces
Relies on organizations rules, policies, and procedures to direct the groups work effort
Very about going by what the policy says
situational leadership
Adapts leadership style to situation, approach changes
Charismatic leadership
Leader cultivates an emotional relationship with group members
Believes that charming personality evokes feelings of commitment
Transactional leadership
Relationship with group members is based on their exchange for valued resources
Leader focuses on the day to day tasks, and understanding/meeting with the groups needs
Servant leadership
Run by the belief that most effective leaders are motivated by their desire to serve
Place others needs before their own
There is an emphasize on service, caring and compassion
What is an effective leader
Has a vision: possible and desireable future state
Transforms a vision into a realistic future goal
Relies on influence
Acts as a positive role model
4 stage process involved in planning
Establish goals
Evaluate present situation and predict future trends and events
Formulate planning statement
Convert the plan into action statement
Can be either strategic or contingent
This process addresses the what, when,where and why
Strategic planning
Describes overall purpose, desired results of organization and describes how results will be achieved
Uses assessment,planning and evaluation
Contingency plan
Helps prepare for unplanned events, may be done reactively or proactively
Describe directing management
The process of getting the organizations work done
Manager has ability to direct based on his or her power of authority and leader ship style
Requires communication abilities, motivational techniques, and delegation skills
Describe controlling management
Compares actual results with projected results, like evaluation in nursing process
Include establishing performance standards, determining how measures performs
Creates tools for measure. evaluating performance, and providing feedback
Define authority in management
The right to direct other individuals
Must be confident, know they’re accountable to everything that happens and be responsible
Define accountability in management
The ability and willingness to assume responsibility for one’s actions and accept the consequences of one’s behavior
Define responsibility in management
The obligation to meet objectives and perform the tasks
What are the principles of management
Managing resources ( material, financial )
Enhancing employee performance, doing reviews and making sure they have adequate supplies for tasks )
Building and managing teams
Managing conflict ( btw individual and among group or team )
Managing time
What are the qualities of an effective leader
Integrity, Dedication, Magnanimity, Humility, Openness, and Creativity
