Why are health and wellness not the same thing
Health may not always accompany well-being
What is health
The presence or absence of disease

The state of being in good health especially as a goal the individual persues
What are the factors that go into optimal health and wellness
Environmental= food water and air
Occupational= achieving a work life balance
Intellectual= the ability to learn and use new information
Spiritual= a force of nature or higher power provides meaning and purpose in life
Physical= ability to carry out daily tasks and achieve good lifestyle habits through fitness
Emotional= managing stress and emotions
Social= ability to have good interactions with others including intimacy
What is well being
the absence of negative emotions, having positive emotions only
What is illness
How an individual feels, can or cannot be related to a disease
Impacts physical, emotional and social
What is a disease
An alteration/body function that reduces the persons capacity or shortens their lifespan
Can affect mentally and physically
Acute classification of illness
symptoms appear suddenly and subside quickly
Most return to state of wellness
Chronic classification of illness
last for six months or longer or the duration of someones life
Symptoms often disappear and reappear
What does injury/illness impact in one’s life
Can impact the whole family
Can require lifestyle changes
Can result in financial costs
Can impact household or relationships
Can cause feelings of anxiety, hopelessness, denial and depression
Most importantly patient can lose autonomy (state of being independent and self directed) and their role they have in the family
Advocacy role
The nurse advocates for the patient by educating the patients about their rights.
Also assesses the ability of the patience to understand, read, and interpret information
Family role
The nurse includes the family in the educational process, takes into consideration the impact of family crisis and the effect it can have on the patient’s recovery
Mobility role
The nurse ensures the patient understands and is capable of using crutches/cane, and the needs for safety when climbing stairs
Encourages physical fitness
4 ten year goals
1.Attain high-quality, longer lives free of disease/disability/injury and premature death
2.Achieve high equity, illuminate disparities, improve healthcare for all groups
3.Create social and physical environments that promote good health for all
4.Promote quality of life, healthy development, and healthy behaviors across all life stages
Primary prevention
Focuses on health promotion and illness prevention
Nonmedical prevention
Lifestyle changes
Use of a seatbelt, wearing a helmet, immunizations
Secondary prevention
directed at people who are at risk fro a disease, focuses on diagnosis and treatment of the disease
Colon cancer screenings, PPD for TB, mammograms for breast cancer
Tertiary prevention
Treatment of rehabilitation when a condition is irreversible or permanent
Reduced the number and impact of complications
Collaborative efforts are necessary!
