Sports pastimes that were organised by the middle class and played by the lower class and were more organised and structured.
What was the difference between popular and rational recreation.
Popular recreation was created by the lower class whereas rational recreation was created by the middle class. Rational recreation also designed to be well organised and controlled.
Who was Dr William Penny Brookes?
The founder of the Wenlock Olympian Games, a doctor and a surgeon.
What did Dr Brookes do?
Founded the Wenlock Olympian Games in 1850 and campaigned for PE to be added to the national school curriculum.
Who was allowed to compete in the Wenlock Olympian Games?
Any class but mostly lower class athletes competed.
Why was the Wenlock Olympian Games created?
To promote moral, physical and intellectual improvements in society and particularly within the lower class.
What was the industrial revolution?
When Britain changed to an industrialised, machine-based, capitalist society, controlled by the upper middle class.
When did the industrial revolution occur?
Mid-eighteenth to mid-nineteenth century.
What happened to the rural population of Britain during the industrial revolution?
The majority of rural lower class citizens migrated to big cities to seek employment in the newly founded factories.
What were the negative effects of industrialisation to the working class people?
Poor health and hygiene, lack of income, lack of time, lack of facility provision, overcrowding, loss of rights.
