Guidance and feedback Flashcards
What are the 6 types of feedback?
Positive, negative, extrinsic, intrinsic, knowledge of results, knowledge of performance.
What is feedback?
information to aid error correction.
What is the purpose of positive feedback?
To give the performer encouragement.
What is the purpose of negative feedback?
To make the performer correct their errors.
What is an example of intrinsic feedback?
When a player knows that they have hit a bad shot in football purely from the feeling.
What type of players are most likely to experience intrinsic feedback through kinaesthesis?
Autonomous level players.
Who will benefit most from positive feedback and why?
Cognitive learners as they rely upon motivation from others to carry on playing.
What is an example of extrinsic feedback?
A coach giving the performer advice.
What is the difference between knowledge or results and performance?
Knowledge of results indicates whether or not the skill was successful whereas knowledge of performance is concerned with why it was or wasn’t successful through technique.
What is guidance?
Where a coach will offer assistance in some way to help enhance a performers learning.
What are the four methods of guidance?
Visual, verbal, mechanical, manual.
What is visual guidance?
Guidance that can be seen. For example, a demonstration.
What is verbal guidance?
An explanation of the task.
What is manual guidance?
Physical support from another person. For example, a coach holding a gymnast during a headstand.
What is mechanical guidance?
Using an artificial aid. For example, a swimmer using a floating device.
What is one advantage and disadvantage of visual guidance?
It can be used to highlight a specific weakness however the demonstration has to be completely accurate otherwise it will cause an incorrect skill to be learnt.
What is one advantage and disadvantage of verbal guidance?
It can be used to provide a mental picture of the task however confusion may occur if the performer is given too much information.
What is one advantage and disadvantage of manual guidance?
It helps develop kinaesthesis for the task however if it is over-used then the performer will become reliant on the support.
What is one advantage and disadvantage of mechanical guidance?
It builds the confidence of the performer, regardless that they are using equipment however if it is over-used the performer may lose motivation as they are not completing the task independently.
