Group dynamics Flashcards
Name the four stages of Tuckman’s model.
Forming, storming, norming, performing
What happens during the forming stage?
The group meets.
What happens during the storming stage?
Potential conflicts arise as the group fights for positions and status etc.
Explain the norming stage.
The conflicts are resolved, positions are agreed and standards are accepted.
Explain the performing stage of formation.
The team is working together towards one goal.
Define cohesion.
The tendency for individuals to work together to achieve their goals.
Define task cohesion.
The shared commitment among members to achieving a goal.
Define social cohesion.
The attraction between group members and how well the group works with each other.
Define actual productivity
How the team performs on the day.
Define potential productivity
The best possible performance that the team is capable of.
What is Steiner’s model of group productivity?
Actual productivity = Potential productivity - losses due to faulty group processing
What are the four factors of Carron’s model?
Environmental, Personal, Leadership, Team.
What are the personal factors? (Carron)
The aspirations, opinions and values of the group.
Explain the team factors (Carron).
More success = More cohesion.
What is meant by leadership factors? (Carron)
The leadership approach: Autocratic, Democratic and laissez-faire.
Explain the environmental factors. (Carron)
Higher size of group > more chance of productivity but higher chance of social loafing and ringleman effect. More time available > greater cohesion.
What are the characteristics of a team?
A collective identity, Interaction, Communication and A shared goal.
