Repiratory Flashcards
What nerve increases breathing rate?
The Phrenic nerve.
What nerve decreases breathing rate?
The Intercostal nerve.
What is the Passage of air?
Nose > larynx > trachea > bronchi > bronchioles > alveoli.
What is diffusion?
The movement of gas molecules from a high to a low concentration/partial pressure.
What is gaseous exchange?
The movement of oxygen to blood and carbon dioxide to air.
At rest, what muscles are used for inspiration (breathing in)?
Diaphragm, External intercostals
What muscles are used for expiration during rest?
None, the diaphragm and external intercostals just relax.
During exercise, what muscles contract for inspiration?
Diaphragm, external intercostals, sternocleidomastoid, scalenes, pectoralis minor
During exercise, what muscles are used for expiration?
Internal intercostals, Abdominals
What is Tidal volume?
Volume breathed in/out per breath.
What is inspiratory reserve volume?
Volume that can be breathed in after a normal breath.
What is expiratory reserve volume?
Volume that can be breathed out after a normal breath.
What is residual volume?
Volume of air that remains in the lungs after maximum expiration.
What is minute ventilation?
Volume breathed in/out per minute.
What happens to tidal volume during exercise?
Increase.
