Angular motion Flashcards
What is angular motion?
When a body rotates around an axis.
How is angular motion caused?
By an eccentric force impacting the body.
What is the equation for moment of torque?
Force (N) x Perpendicular distance from fulcrum (m).
What is Newton’s first law of angular motion?
A body will continue to rotate around an axis unless a an external rotational force is exerted.
What is Newton’s second law of angular motion?
The rate of angular acceleration is proportional to the eccentric forcing causing it and the change that takes place in the direction which the turning force acts.
What is Newton’s third law of angular motion?
To every eccentric action, there is an equal and opposite eccentric reaction.
What is angular displacement?
The change in angle between the starting and finishing point.
What is angular velocity?
The rotational speed of an object around an axis.
What is the measurement of angular velocity?
rads/ s
What is the measurement of angular acceleration?
rads/ s2
What is angular acceleration?
The rate of change of angular velocity.
Define conservation of angular momentum.
A body will keep on rotating unless forces act upon it.
What is the equation for conservation of angular momentum?
Conservation of angular momentum = Angular velocity x Moment of inertia.
What is moment of inertia?
The resistance of a body to changes its state of angular motion.
How does the mass of the object affect its momentum of inertia?
The greater the mass = the greater moment of inertia.
How does the distribution of mass of an object affect the moment of inertia?
The greater the distance of mass from the axis of rotation = the greater the moment of inertia.
How can a gymnast increase the amount of somersaults during a jump?
They can tuck their arms and legs in to move the mass closer to the axis of rotation to decrease the moment of inertia and therefore, increase their angular velocity.
