Chp 33 Intro to Invertebrates Phylum Breakdown Flashcards
What is in the phylum porifera?
Sponges
What are some characteristics of Porifera?
- lack true tissues
- Have choanocytes -> collar cells/flagellated cells that ingest bacteria and tiny food particles
What consists of the phylum cnidaria?
- hydras
- jellies
- sea anemones
- corals
What are the characteristics of cnidaria?
- unique stinging structures (nematocytes) located in specialized cells (cnidocytes)
- diploblastic
- radially symmetrical
- Has a gastrovascular cavity (digestive sac with a single opening)
What consists of the phylum platyhelminthes?
Flatworms
What are some characteristics of platyhelminthes?
- dorsoventrally flattened acoelomates
- Gastrovascular cavity or no digestive tract
What consists of the phylum Rotifera?
Rotifers
What are some characteristics of Rotifera?
- Pseudocoelomates with alimentary canal (digestive tube with mouth and anus)
- jaws (trophi)
- head with ciliated crown
What are characteristics of the phylums Lophophorates, Ectoprocta, and Brachiopoda?
- Coelomates with lophophores (feeding structures bearing ciliated tentacles)
What consist of phylum Mollusca?
- clams
- snails
- squids
What are some characteristics of Mollusca?
- Coelomates with three main body
parts (muscular foot, visceral mass,
mantle) - coelom reduce
- most have
hard shell made of calcium carbonate
What consists of the phylum Annelida?
Segmented worms
What are some characteristics of Annelida?
Coelomates with segmented body
wall and internal organs (except digestive tract, which is unsegmented)
What consists of the phylum Nematoda?
roundworms
What are some characteristics of Nematoda?
- Cylindrical pseudocoelomates with
tapered ends
-no circulatory system - undergo ecdysis
