Ch 5.5- Organs and Body membranes Flashcards
what are body membranes made of?
Epithelial and connective tissue
What do body membranes do?
Line cavities, cover the viscera, and cover the body.
What are the four types of body membranes?
Mucous, serous, cutaneous, and synovial
mucous membranes (mucosa)
Structure: Epithelium and underlying connective tissue called lamina propria.
Function: Lines passageways that eventually open to the external. Absorptive, protective, and secretory functions.
Locations: Digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive
Serous membranes (mesothelium)
Structure: Simple squamous epithelium
Function: Line body cavities and don’t open to external environment. Covers the external surface of many organs. Produces thin water fluid (transudate).
Locations: Pericardium, pleura, peritoneum.
What are the two lanes of serous membranes?
Parietal- lines the inside of the body cavity
Visceral- covers the surface of the internal organs.
Cutaneous membrane
Structure: Keratinized Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Function: Protect internal organs and prevent water loss.
Location: External body surfaces
Synovial Membranes
Structure:
Function: Reduce friction among moving body parts. distributes nutrients to cartilage on the articular surface of bone.
Locations: Some joints
