17.8- Thyroid Gland Flashcards
What are the cell type of the walls of follicle cells in the thyroid?
Simple cuboidal epithelial
What is the viscous protein rich fluid that is inside the follicles of the thyroid gland?
Colloid
Which cells of the thyroid synthesize and release calcitonin?
Parafollicular cells.
What does thyroid hormone do on a cellular level?
Increases protein synthesis
Is there more T4 or T3 in the blood?
More T4. T4 is 90% and T3 is 10%.
Specific emphasis on synthesis of sodium/potassium pumps.
Calorgenic effect
the rise in temperature created by the action of sodium/potassium pumps.
Why is calcitonin released from parafollicular cells?
High blood calcium levels- inhibits osteoclast activity in the bone tissue and stimulates kidneys to increase loss of calcium.
