Ch. 14.1- Overview Flashcards
Spinal reflexes
Nervous system responses that do not require the input of the brain.
These are our tastes responses.
Where does the spinal cord end?
The superior border of the small of the back.
Posterior median sulcus
Narrow groove on the posterior surface of the spinal cord.
Anterior median sulcus
Slightly wider groove than the posterior median sulcus that in on the anterior side of the spinal cord.
Endoneurium
Electrically insulates each individual axon
Perineurium
Encloses each bundle of axons (fascicles)
Epineurium
Ensheathes the entire nerve.
How many spinal nerves are there?
31
How many of each type of nerve are there in the spine?
C 1-8 T 1-12 L 1-5 S 1-5 Coccyx-1
What are nerve plexuses?
Extensions of the spinal cord.
What are the two roots of each spinal nerve?
What are their roles?
Posterior root- Sensory receptors send signals to the spine through here. Has ganglion.
Anterior root- contains motor neurons that extend to effectors. Usually involved in muscle control. No ganglion present here.
Posterior root ganglion
Cell bodies that are gathered in the posterior root and outside the spinal cord.
Multipolar neurons
Motor neurons that compose the spinal nerve.
Cauda Equina
This is where the spinal nerves stop heading out directly from the spinal cord and instead move inferiorly till they reach the point where the exit the vertebral column. This exists as the spinal cord itself is not as long as the vertebral column.
Conus Medullaris
Most superior part of the caudate equine.
