Ch. 17.1 Flashcards
Hormones
Molecules that are synthesized and secreted by endocrine glands.
Target cells
Cells that have specific receptors for a hormone.
What are the functions of the endocrine system?
Regulates growth, development, and metabolism.
Maintains homeostasis of blood composition and volume.
Controls digestive process.
Controlling reproductive activities.
How does the endocrine system regulate growth, development, and metabolism?
Play a role in cell division and cell differentiation. Hormone also control metabolic (anabolic and catabolic) activities.
How does the endocrine system regulate homeostasis of the blood composition and volume?
Endocrine glands regulate the amount of substances that are dissolved in the blood (i.e. glucose, amino acids, and ions) Also helps regulate volume, cellular concentration, and number of platelets.
How does the endocrine system control digestive process?
Hormones help control secretion and movement through the GI tract. I.E. Gastrin- increases stomach contraction and secretion.
How does the endocrine system control reproductive activities?
Regulates development and function of reproductive system as well as expressions of reproductive behavior.
I.E. Prolactin- stimulates production of breast milk.
