14.6- Reflexes Flashcards
Reflexes
Rapid, preprogrammed, involuntary responses.
Properties of reflexes
Stimulus to initiate refles
Rapid response-
Preprogrammed response
Involuntary response
Reflex arc
Sensory receptor, effector, and the neural wiring between the two.
What are the four common types of spinal reflexes?
Stretch reflex, Golgi tendon reflex, withdrawal reflex, and cross extensor reflex.
Muscle spindle
Proprioreceptor
Made from intrafusal muscle fibers surrounded by connective tissue capsule.
These have no myofilaments.- Only have contraction on the end.
Stretch reflex
Initiated by muscle spindle as a flexion response to stretch.
this is a monosynaptic response
Golgi tendon reflex
this stops muscles from contracting excessively.
Reciprocal activation
When sensory neurons communicate with other sensory neurons in the spinal cord that stimulates alpha motor neurons for the antagonistic muscle.
I.E. the quad is contraction too hard and so it is told to relax while the hamstring muscles are told to contract.
Withdrawal reflex
Made for withdrawal from pain. Uses nociceptors.
Nociceptors
Pain receptors.
Cross-extensor reflex
Used in conjunction with withdrawal reflex. If a dog bites your arm you pull that arm back while thrusting the other arm out to push it away.
