13.7- Function brain systems Flashcards
What are the parts of the limbic system?
Cingulate Gyrus Parahypocampal Gyrus Hippocampus Amygdaloid Body Olfactory bulbs, tracts, and cortex Fornix Nuclei of the diencephalon (anterior thalamic nuclei, habenular nuclei, septal nuclei, mammillary bodies)
Cingulate Gyrus
Internal mass of the cerebral cortex located within the longitudinal fissure and superior to the corpus colossus.
Seen only in a sagittal section and it surrounds the diencephalon.
Receives input from other components of the limbic system.
Parahypocampal Gyrus
Mass of cerebral cortical tissue in the temporal lobe.
Functions associated with hippocampus.
Hippocampus
Component of the cerebrum located superior to the Parahypocampal gyrus.
Connects to the diencephalon via the fornix.
Nucleus shaped like a seahorse.
Essential in storing memory and forming long term memory.
Amygdaloid body
Connects to the hippocampus.
Involved in fear and other emotions
Can help store and code memories based on how a person perceives them.
Olfactory bulbs, tracts, and cortex
Emotion connected to smells and memories.
Fornix
Thin white matter connecting the hippocampus with the limbic system structure of the diencephalon.
Reticular formation
Loosely organized gray matter that projects through the midbrain, pons, and medulla.
Motor and sensory components.
Regulates muscle tone
Assistes in autonomie muscle movements like BP, HR, and Respiration.
Reticular activation system.
Sensory components of the reticular formation
Awareness of sensation and voluntary control of motor activities.
What is the highest level of consciousness?
Alertness- when a person is A/O X4
